![]() Ah, yes, Final Fantasy II. Who could ever forget you? You are the first sequel to Final Fantasy, a series whose name had just become oxymoronic. You added more plot than the first game. You introduced chobocos and Cid to the series. Your main characters now have names, their own pasts and personalities, albeit very simplistic. "Huh? Isn't Final Fantasy II the one with Cecil?", someone might ask. Well, the thing is that this is the real Final Fantasy II. The one that was released as the second one on the SNES was, in fact, Final Fantasy IV. Why did this happen? At the time, Square hit it big with the first game, and quickly started production on the sequel. The game was released in Japan, and translators got ready and even translated a good portion of the game to english, but unfortunately, the translation effort only started some years after the game was first released, and Square was already working on the fourth game in the series, so they decided to focus their translation effort on the newer games and the new console by Nintendo: the Super Nintendo. ![]() Final Fantasy II does a few things differently from its predecessor. One of those things is the removal of the traditional leveling up mechanic. Instead, Final Fantasy II uses a stat progression system, not unlike The Elder Scrolls and SaGa series, where you increase your abilities by doing them. For example, if you want to get better at using swords, you attack using swords. If you want to increase your magic power, you need to cast a lot magic. If you want to increase your health, you need to be damaged, and so on... It might seem like a good idea on theory, but it is awful in practice. Characters do not have their own set classes/jobs, opposite to the first game. You can equip any type of equipment on any character and any kind of spell. The idea being that you'll create your own "custom class". The game also implemented the Magic Points system (MP), instead of using charges for magic like in the first game. Otherwise the game is pretty much exactly like its predecessor. The Dawn of Souls version of the game, as well as the recent ports, have a bonus dungeon/quest that becomes available after you finish the game, so we might check that out later. Do you need to know about the first game to play the second one? Nope. ![]() 1 - Introduction 2 - Owned 3 - Expletives 4 - Heading towards Fynn 5 - Return to Fynn Edited by Amnesia, Apr 19 2014, 04:04 PM.

![]() This chapter will show the intro FMV of the game that is present on the PSX and PSP versions of the game. This intro is not present in the GBA version of the game, unfortunately, due to space limitations. The video's original resolution is 320 x 240 pixels, probably because they wanted to make the video file as small as possible in order to fit inside the CD, but I resized the images because they were too small. They lost a bit of quality, but it is barely noticeable. ![]() Obviously Evil Emperor: "Hmm... I could go for some pizza today." Wait, I just realized something. I thought those horns on his head were actual horns, but looking closely, they are actually his hair. What the fuck. ![]() A village can be seen burning. I smell not smoke, but a RPG cliché. ![]() A group of teenagers (perhaps young adults? It is never clear) can be seen running away desperately. A nearby tower crumbles and spreads fire towards them. The girl falls on the floor and the other two look behind them and see... ![]() ...Soldiers marching through fire. Evil Knight 1: "We have come for our pizza order." Evil Knight 2: "Sorry about the fire." ![]() Girl: "But we don't have any pizzas." ![]() Black Knight 1: "Lies! Give us our pizza with anchovies!" The knight prepares to attack the girl on the floor when suddenly... ![]() Man with sword: "Anchovies!? Pepperoni is the best pizza topping!" ...This guy comes out of nowhere and proclaims that pepperoni is the best pizza topping. He seems to be quite capable with a sword. ![]() He is then almost overwhelmed by another pizza-seeking knight, but he is saved by the white haired boy who throws knives at the brutal knight. Black Knight 4: "What did we do wrong? We only wanted a pizza!" Black Knight 2: "The fire was an accident!" The wounded black knight falls, but quickly gets up to his feet. The other knights rally around him and move towards the group. The teenagers, outnumbered and outmatched by the fierce knights, run away through the woods. ![]() The group reaches the top of a cliff facing the other side of the village. They have escaped from the knights, but their home was destroyed. All because of a pizza. The white-haired boy seems to be looking away from the burning village, however. White-haired boy: "Damn, she has such a fine ass." What will become of this group of teenagers? Seriously though, here's the opening FMV video, if you wanna watch it. This was pretty much a filler chapter to get things going. |

![]() ![]() Now we'll actually begin with the game proper. The intro FMV from the PSX and PSP versions play before the game starts, so there's no worry of it being out of place. Keep in mind that this is the GBA port of the game, so don't confuse the versions. ![]() Like in the first game, you can also choose names for the characters, but this time you can't choose their classes. Since someone kept bothering me in another forum to give him a prize, I decided to do this. WILL YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP NOW FAGGOT!? ![]() ![]() Narrator: "...is at an end." ...That cat is going to die, won't it? Goddamn it game. ![]() The metrosexual emperor wants his pizza with anchovies, but no one is willing to make it for him, and so he retaliates through summoning bombs to attack the village. Not actual bombs, but the bomb creatures from the series. Those who look like flames but are alive, you know. The cat from before is nowhere to be seen. Narrator: "The emperor of Palamecia has called forth monsters from the underworld...and has begun his campaign for world conquest." Wait, I think I've heard this story before. ![]() Narrator: "A rebel army arose in the Kindgom of Fynn to thwart the emperor's plans." ![]() Narrator: "But the rebels' castle fell to an all-out assault by the empire." That guy that is getting surrounded by the knights? Yep, dead. He will become important later. All the others managed to run away. Narrator: "Left with little choice, the rebels withdrew to the remote town of Altair." ![]() That's not Altair, by the way. That's Fynn. It's a little unclear during the cutscene. Narrator: "Four youths from Fynn also found themselves fleeing the imperial forces. They had lost their parents at the hands of the empire." Narrator: "But their escape wasn't over..." ![]() Hell yeah, finally some action! ![]() Wait, what. So, yeah! Here's your introduction to Final Fantasy II! The game begins by killing you just after it begins. It is a cool introduction, in my opinion. You can't really do anything during this fight, as the Black Knights start by attacking first, and their attacks deal around 700-800 damage, and there is no way to survive that. Even if you do manage to attack them even once, the damage will be almost nonexistent. However, if you cheat during this fight, through the use of GameShark codes and the like, you can actually win it. If you do win, however, you'll just return to the game's main menu screen, instead of just continuing with the game. It's a neat little detail. |

Right? The world burns because of a pizza. Such senselessness. Edited by Amnesia, Apr 12 2014, 05:27 PM.

![]() ![]() Two mysterious characters are trying to resurrect us, or summon Satan through our body. It is ambiguous. ![]() Al-Qaeda member assures the woman that it will be fine. The woman then mentions that they found us wounded and laying on the ground when they were also trying to escape from Fynn. By the time we got here, the woman feared that it was too late for us. The man assures that everything will be fine as he is resting on a magical sigil on the floor. Dude, you look like you can cast some spells. Could you, you know, use them? The woman says that they should leave for some sort of meeting. She mentions something about the empire completing a "Dreadnought" they're building in Bafsk and we will be fucked it they complete it. Meh, I'm sure it won't come up again. They then leave the room. ![]() This is turning out better than I expected. Fuck, after waking up, notices that his friends are missing and proceeds to scream their names: "Gee!", "Tits!" and "Me!", wondering where they could be. The other people in the next room must think that he must have damaged his head. If only they knew. ...Wait how did he put on makeup after the PSX FMV? I guess hipsters do exist in all time periods and dimensions, after all. The first hipster of the Final Fantasy universe then leaves the room in search of his friends. ![]() Tits cannot control her use of expletives when she discovers that her adopted brother is alive. Fuck replies: "I'm fine, Tits. You alright too, Me? But wait... Where's Gee?" See, the parents of Fuck, Tits and Gee are borderline retarded. No, I'm being serious. This is the reason why they are named like that. When their parents went to register their names at the kingdom, the only words that came to their mind was Tits. "Gee" was the response of the person in charge of registering newborns, and Tits and Gee's parents liked it. Fuck was adopted some years later by them. He actually had a name, "Firion", but his new parents thought that it was gay, and so they changed it so he could grow to become a manly man. It didn't work. ![]() The story of Me, however, is sadder. Me's parents left him while he was still a baby, and left him to die. Me was found by retarded beavers, who took care of him until he became older. As a result, he is able to speak beaver. I'm half-serious. Anyway, so that woman is a princess. I guess her dress kinda tips you off, eh? More importantly, Me mentions that Gee is not here. Fuck is nonchalant about it, saying that he's probably okay. They then enter the nearby room. ![]() I guess that sigil was legit. Fuck thanks the princess for saving them, and quickly asks her to allow them to join the rebel army. Although they did show some ability during the FMV, they were still owned and were left for dead. Also, since princess Hilda did not see the sick dagger-throwing skills of Fuck, she refuses to let them join the rebel army and tells them go to home. Ouch. Tits is quick to mention that their parents were murdered and their homes destroyed. But... ![]() ...Hilda does not give a fuck. She does say that they are welcome to stay here, at Altair (not the Assassin's Creed character, although I foresee a DLC in the future), and also tell us the secret password of the rebels: ![]() Final Fantasy II has an interesting dialogue system. During certain conversations with important characters, you might be able to learn new keywords and information by choosing the "Learn" option. You can then ask for more information about these keywords to every characters in the game that you can ask, although not all characters will know what you're asking them. After we learn the password, we ask Hilda about it. ![]() : "It represents our hope for a future that flourishes in both strength and beauty. But what will become of Fynn now? I've heard that the empire's captives have been taken there and suffer even as we speak. Tits, your brother Gee is missing, is he not? It's possible that he's being held in Fynn as well. But Fynn is far too dangerous now. The emperor's beasts still stalk the streets. Gaining entrance to the city will not be easy... The man at my right is Minwu, the white wizard who tended your wounds. Speak with him before you leave. He may be of some assistance."Is it just me, or does the dialogue not make sense when you put it all together like that? There weren't any animations or anything of the like, just text boxes after text boxes. As if the senteces are unrelated to each other. Like... poorly written dialogue. And they wrote a fucking novel out of it, too! |

![]() Welcome back. In the previous chapter, we had talked to Hilda and she said to talk to Minwu, the guy with the white robe, who will give us some advice before we leave for Fynn. ![]() Fate is a very strong word, but sure. The advice that Minwu gives is that if one of your party member is KO'ed, just go to a sanctuary to revive them. The sanctuaries work in a similar manner as the churches do in the first game. One of the NPCs in the room mentions that the port of Paloom is east of where we are. But we won't be able to reach it without a canoe. We will get one later. In the same room, an old sage tells us that to the north lies the city of Gatrea, near the city of Fynn, and that we would be lucky to even reach it alive. I guess he didn't see the FMV opening. He also tells us that before we leave we should return to the room with sigil so we can have some tutorials, but I'll explain things as they happen. There's not much to explain, really. ![]() Leaving the altar room and going to the right, we can find the king's bedchamber. Since he is injured, his daughter Hilda had to take care of everything. Must be hard times for everyone here. ![]() Going downstairs, we can find some NPCs loitering about and our first chest in the game. Hooray! One of the NPCs mention that Gordon, a prince of Kashuan is hiding out here in Altair. Apparently he has lost faith in himself (read: became a pussy). We will meet him soon. Someone else in the room also mentions that Hilda is doing a great job of leading the rebel army. Good to know. We then leave the rebel hideout and walk around the town of Altair. ![]() Meet Paul, the cool thief. He only steals stuff from the imperials. Also, he has a name and a character portrait, which means he must be important. The town of Altair has not yet been attacked by the imperial forces, even though the town is not really that far away from Fynn, at least from the overworld's perspective. Hell, the place could be miles away and could take days to get there walking that are not reflected in the game. ![]() And here's Gordon, prince of Kashuan, and resident mopey loser character of this game. His brother, Scott, was the one we saw getting killed during the game's introduction. As you can see, he also has a character portrait, and that means that he is important. After talking to everyone in town, I went to buy some defensive gear for our party members and buy a Cure spell. Equipment and spells work a little differently in this game. In regards to equipment, a new addition is dual-wielding. You can equip weapons and shields on the left or right hand on a character. Each character has their own dominant arm, so they will deal more damage and will be more accurate with their dominant hand. You can even equip two shields on both hands, but the character will not be able to attack. Instead of you buying a spell for a single character, you buy a spell tome that you can then equip on a character. All spells start at level 1, and the maximum is 16. To level up spells, you have to use them a certain number of times. This takes a long time and is made even worse due to the fact that most spells are almost useless when at low levels. I hope you enjoy grinding. ![]() And welcome to the overworld, everyone. They work just the way they do in other games. Before we continue with our adventure, we must go south of our location. To... ![]() ...the Peninsula of Power. Yes, you find it just near where you start in the game. Neat, huh? The Peninsula of Power is a special location that you can fight monsters that you shouldn't be fighting yet. It returns from the first game. Supposedly it was a bug in the first game, but they liked it and made it appear in other games as well. ![]() And we have died! Our first death! LOAD GAME ![]() Let's go to a real battle now. That one didn't count. Battles work in a similar way as the first game. You can attack, cast spells, use items, run away... the usual. A new addition to Final Fantasy II is the row system. See how Tits is a little behind Fuck and Me? That means she is at the back row. Characters in the back row cannot attack enemies using normal weapons like swords, if they do, they'll probably miss or deal minimum damage. They can, however, and should, equip bows, as they will still deal damage even from the back row. While in the back row, they'll also be more resistant to physical attacks. In a nutshell, the back row is suited for mage characters. ![]() And we have defeated our first enemies. Yay! Now, let's discuss the level up system of this game. It doesn't have a level up system exactly, but a skill progression system. It basically works like this: The more you attack, the stronger you'll become, the more you take damage the more your resistance and health increases, the more you use swords the better you get at them. That sort of stuff. For example, as you can see in the above screenshot, Fuck took a lot of damage when the battle ended, and so his HP increased. This system was given a lot of flak by the fact that it basically meant that the most effective way of increasing your skills was attacking your party members. I recommend checking out Hardcore Gaming's excellent article on Final Fantasy II that talks about it. In the japanese NES version, there was a bug that you could exploit to level up your skills faster, but it was fixed in this release of the game. |
